What are Envi and Envi 8 Firewood Blocks?

Envi - Enviro Firewood Blocks are an all wood product made of sawdust and shaving material from hardwood flooring. The all hardwood sawdust and shavings are mechanically compressed into a larger block size. The hardwood sawdust is a mix of Oak, Cherry, Walnut, and Hard Maple.

What are Envi and Envi 8 Firewood Blocks made of?

Envi - Enviro Firewood Blocks are made of saw dust and shaving material from hardwood flooring. The hardwood sawdust may be all or a mix of Oak, Cherry, Walnut, and Hard Maple. The source of material comes from Envi Blocks parent company Barefoot Flooring. Barefoot Flooring produces the finest wood floors and uses only the best flooring material. The saw dust is collected during the milling process. The hardwood sawdust is a mix of Oak, Cherry, Walnut, and Hard Maple.

Is there any glue or chemicals in the Envi - Enviro Block Firewood?

No, Envi - Enviro Firewood Blocks do not have any additives, wax, glue, paste etc. They are an ALL NATURAL hardwood firewood block.

Other chemical blocks that are burned for firewood ambiance are dangerous. They have warning labels for pregnant women and load your chimney with wax increasing the chance of a chimney fire.

What holds the Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood together?

Hardwood flooring is kiln dried. The flooring material must be under 9% moisture. The sawdust material is heated. The moisture level is raised to 6% moisture and pressed at several thousands pounds per inch. The wood fibers relock creating a solid dense block that does not fall apart or crumble when handling. My experience in testing the blocks have proven the blocks are being delivered at 1 to 0 % moister on the average.

Other bricks I tested when I was looking for a brick to burn had and average of 6% moisture on the outside and almost double that at the center.

Can I burn Envi and Envi 8 Firewood Blocks in my Fireplace -

Wood burning insert - Wood burning stove - Chimania - Fire pit?

Yes, Envi - Enviro Block Firewood can be used in the same applications where you use firewood. Be aware that the blocks do burn longer and hotter than firewood. I personally burn in a Regency wood burning insert from October – April. We also use the blocks in our Fire Pit and Chimanias during the summer.

Can I mix split firewood with the Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood?

Yes, Envi - Enviro Block Firewood is often mixed with split firewood. The blocks are used to supplement the firewood.

The four common scenarios for mixing firewood are:

1. The split wood that was delivered or self split is not seasoned. The Envi or Envi 8 Blocks are used to start the fire and will act as the base. The split firewood is added on top or along with one or two Envi or Envi 8 Blocks to help burn off the excess moisture in the split firewood.

2. The split firewood got buried in a snow storm or it is raining and icy out. The Envi or Envi 8 Blocks Firewood is kept indoors to keep the family warm and dry until the split firewood is dug out or the rain stops.

3. The Stoves are loaded with Envi or Envi 8 Blocks for the overnight burn. This allowed the owner to sleep and not have to get up several time during the night to load the stove. There will be enough amber in the morning to star loading the firewood every couple of hours.

4. Husband likes split firewood. Wife hates the mess and bugs. The husband loads firewood when he is home. The wife loads the blocks when she is home.

Should I burn the Envi Blocks or the Envi 8 Blocks?

The two things to consider are who is loading the stove and how big is the stove burning area? Many women and seniors prefer the Envi 8 blocks as each block is the smaller and lighter of the two blocks. It is easy to handle. Some of the smaller stoves require the Envi 8 block due to the small burning chambers. Other than the two scenarios mentioned, I find it is a matter of personal choice.

How long do the Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood last?

The rated burn time on a pack of blocks is 8 to ten hours. This will vary deepening on the stove, home insulation, the tempter you’re trying to maintain, and the area you are trying to heat.

My personal experience with an amber base started. At night time I put in one or two pack of the Envi Block or Envi 8 Block Firewood. The amount of packs I use will depend on how hot I want the room. I let the blocks burn up until the stove thermometer reaches 500 degrees on the surface thermometer. I then cut the damper down to 2 fingers. My stove will burn at that temperature for several hours and stay over 400 degrees on the surface thermometer for several more hours. I can easily get 12 hours and average about 15 hours before the stove blower automatically turns off. The blower will turn off when the surface thermometer reaches about 100%

Do the Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood burn cleaner than split firewood?

Yes, Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood burn much cleaner then split firewood. There is no tree bark, nails, or debris hidden in the blocks. There is no softwood with heavy tree sap or high moisture that builds creosol in your chimney or on stove doors. Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood are rated at .5 % ash. Overall there are no toxins, less creosol, and less ash when burning the blocks.

What is the equivalent of a cord of wood?

One ton of Envi Block or Envi 8 Block Firewood is equals to one cord of split firewood in burn time. One ton of Envi Block or Envi 8 Block Firewood is rated as one to 1 1/8th of a cord depending on how you burn. The blocks store in about 1/3rd less space than a cord of firewood.

How much heat can I expect from the Envi and Envi 8 Firewood Blocks compared to firewood?

Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood are rated at over 8000 BTU's. Seasoned firewood should be less than 25% to 20% moisture. At 15% moisture, there is still more water in the split firewood wood than the Envi blocks. The water in the split firewood continues to cool the flame limiting the BTU's. The blocks are delivered at almost 0% moisture. A tremendous amount of heat with no steam is produced from the blocks.

With an amber base going, I will load my stove up with split firewood. The firewood has to be totally dry for me to get to 500 degrees. I can maintain this temperature by keeping the damper fully opened and feeding the stove every hour. Most of the time my stove is running at 300 to 400 degrees and the damper is fully opened.

When I burn the Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood, I can get my stove consistently up to 500 to 550 degrees. I keep the damper almost closed. I am 2 fingers from closing the damper. The stove can run for several hours before i has to be reloaded.

Split firewood in my area is cheaper than the Envi and Envi 8 Firewood Blocks. Why should I pay more for the Envi and Envi 8 Firewood Blocks?

You get what you pay for. It is very hard to get seasoned firewood on Long Island. Many of the firewood yards do not have the room to store enough firewood to meet the Long Island demand. Other yards buy semi seasoned firewood and sell it as seasoned firewood. There are no pieces of wood infested with spiders, termites, or carpenter ants. There are no scams with short cords or price changes. There is no pile of dirt and debris to clean up after stacking. The biggest bang for your buck along with a huge amount of convenience is the heat return the blocks provide over the unseasoned, semi seasoned and the 5% to 15% moisture in the seasoned firewood.

Do the Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood smell like split firewood?

Yes and No.

No Answer: Many people complain about the smell of firewood. The firewood will smell like chemicals, or more like the house is on fire than a good ski resort fire. Many home owners burn papers, cardboard and other junk, They also burn chemical logs and split firewood that may have hidden rubber from fencing or close lines. This type of firewood burning results in nasty chemical odors. The smell of the house is on fire comes from wet tree barks and unseasoned firewood. This type of firewood burning leads to the pungent smell of a wet fire. If these are the odors you are referring to when you ask if the blocks smell like firewood, then the answered is NO!

Yes Answer: Many of us associate the smell of firewood with being at a ski resort or upstate. There is more of a sweet pleasant smell to the firewood. This firewood is truly seasoned. Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood smell like this but not as strong. Some of that pleasant smell comes from the tree bark. Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood are made from the core of the wood. The materials come from high grade wood used in flooring. You do get the pleasant smell of firewood but not has heavy since there is no tree bark and very little smoke due to the very low moisture level in the blocks. The smell is enough for you to enjoy without disturbing your neighbors.

Do the Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood smoke like split firewood?

Smoke coming out of your chimney is a sign of an inefficient burn. If the wood is smoking, it is not burning efficiently. You are burning your fuel without producing the heat/BTU’s that is needed to heat your home. The low levels of heat burn the firewood up and is released as smoke out of your chimney. This is often caused by unseasoned firewood. Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood produce less smoke if they are kept in a cool dry place. The blocks often light up faster producing higher BTU’s and much less smoke. Seeing little or no smoke out of your chimney is a sign of a great fire that is giving you the max amount of BTU’s.

How much of the Envi Block or Envi 8 Block Firewood should I order?

There are 5 common burning scenarios. Determine what type or burning will apply to you. These scenarios apply to fireplace, wood burning inserts, and wood burning stoves. The burning season starts about the 3rd to 4th week in October where night time temperatures drop to about 45 degrees. The temperatures drop enough to put a slight chill in the air. Your furnace/boiler may go on. The winter peak runs the month of January and February. Temperatures are under 30 degrees and often do down into the teens. The burning season ends about the 2nd week into April where night time temperatures are about 45 degrees. Many people avoid ordering wood March. The thought of spring is this month is a huge deception. I burn ¾ to a cord of firewood from March to mid April depending on the temperatures. One of the Envi 8 block videos I made was filmed mid March. The days time temperature was 45 degrees.

Burning Scenario 1:

I burn one to two hours 3 to 4 nights a week.

1 Ton or Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood would be sufficent for this type or burning.

Burning Scenario 2:

I burn one to two hours every night including weekends.

2 Tons of Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood are enough to keep you going over the winter.

Burning Scenario 3:

I burn several hours every night and almost all weekends.

You will need a minimum or 2 Tons, Possiblyl 3 Tons of Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood depending on your consistency.

Burning Scenario 4:

I heat my home with Firewood to offset the rising cost of fossil fuels. Most people in this scenario will use a minimum of 3 Tons of Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood. 4 Tons is very common. Keep in mind, the burning season starts about Mid October to Mid April. 1 Ton of Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood is equal to 1 cord of firewood. If you burn 3 cords of split firewood and currently have 1 split cord in stock, you will only need 2 Tons of Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood to get you through the season. You can also mix the split firewood with the Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood.

Burning Scenario 5:

Spring, Summer and Fall fire pit burners. Make sure you order extra

If you burn 1 cord of split firewood then you will only need 1 Tons of Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood to get you through the season. You can also mix the split firewood with the Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood.

When should I order my Envi and Envi 8 Firewood Blocks?

1st Orders:

Most Envi and Envi 8 Block burners will order their blocks right after Labor Day. Garages are cleaned out, Pools are closed and room is made for the blocks. It’s still warm out and they can stack the blocks without freezing. This also allows us to get you your order in a reasonable time. These orders are usually delivered the same or next day.

I highly advise not to wait till the last minute when the temperature drops. Many folks that wait till the last minute risk not having blocks to burn that night.

2nd Orders:

Second orders are usually placed January and February. This is about when the 1st Ton of Blocks or split firewood runs out. Envi Block burners usually replace the 1st Ton or order their 3rd ton as more storage space is available. Experience Envi Block burners know to reorder as soon as they can to make sure they get Envi Blocks before we run out. This time of year is also the 1st time new split firewood burners order their 1st Ton of Envi or Envi 8 Block Firewood. They quickly learn seasoned firewood is impossible to find.

3rd Orders:

Do not hesitate to order at the end of February and the beginning of March. As mentioned above, many people avoid ordering firewood March. The thought of spring is this month is a huge deception. I burn ¾ to a cord of firewwood from March to mid April depending on the temperatures. One of the Envi 8 block videos I made was filmed mid March. The days time temperature was 45 degrees.

Do you sell the Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood in individual packs?

Yes, we sell Envi Block and Envi 8 Block Firewood in individual packs. Many customers that are new to the blocks will purchase 5 packages to get a good idea on how the blocks burn. We also have customers that will purchase individual packages to burn in their fire pits year round. Most of the firewood offered early spring and summer is so green it wont burn on its own.

Firewood buyer complaints.

Wet/green wood that was advertised as seasoned

Insect infected firewood

Short cords of firewood

Oversized stove wood

The cord takes up to much space

The wood is staining my cement.

Many of our customers still burn firewood. Many Just burn Envi blocks. Our firewood burners love using the Envi blocks for overnight burning. The blocks last longer than firewood. This ensures that there will be ambers to keep the stove going in the morning. Our firewood users also love using the Envi blocks to help burn the semi seasoned firewood that was delivered as seasoned firewood.

Some of our customers have run out of firewood mid winter because they don’t have the room to stock more than one cored. The firewood dealers are out or seasoned firewood. They now have a wood alternative.

Other customers have gatherings around their chiminea and fire pits from spring to fall. They only need small amounts of wood to burn. Firewood yards are out of seasoned firewood in the spring. The wood they are gathering is for the upcoming winter. These customers will purchase several packages of Envi blocks for their chiminea and fire pit parties.

We also have women and elderly customers that don’t have the strength or energy to deal with stacking and lifting heavy logs. They don’t want to go out into the cold icy yards to gather firewood. Some of these customers were faced with the expense of pulling their wood stove out and having to purchase a pellet stove as an alternative. Now they have an alternative and are happy with the smaller longer lasting packages that can be stored indoors.

Our part time fireplace burners are folks that light their fireplace once a month. They love the Envi blocks over the small bundles of firewood they use to get at the stores. That wood was often wet from sitting outdoors in the rain. One package of Envi blocks was less expensive and provided them with a hotter longer lasting fire.

All of our customers love the cleanup of the Envi Blocks over firewood. Their vacuums don’t get clogged up with nails, wires and other metal object that were hidden in the firewood.

Disadvantage To Using Firewood

UNSEASONED (GREEWOOD)

Uncut logs sitting in a pile is not seasoned firewood. If the logs were split within a month or two, they are still considered (GREEN WOOD). This wood will NOT burn correctly. This wood will create more smoke and less heat. You will hear and see the steam and moisture coming out of the logs ends.

Firewood needs to be SEASONED before it will burn. This reduces the moisture in the wood and allows for a hotter fire generating higher BTU's

Firewood needs to be split and stacked to allow air to flow through the wood. This helps removed the moisture allowing the wood to season faster. Excessive moisture absorbs heat that would otherwise be heating your house. You’re essentially wasting heat to boil the water in the unseasoned firewood. Unseasoned firewood is hard to light because the moisture is cooling the wood making it harder to reach its igniting temperature.

Firewood needs to be split and stacked for approximately 12 MONTHS to properly season. It needs to be split approximately one year prior to using. Unseasoned firewood will cause creosol build up in your chimney. This will lead to a chimney fire if you do not have the chimney maintenance regularly.

FIREWOOD DEMENTIONS (FACE CORD, HALF CORD, CORD)

A cord is a specific amount of firewood. A cord is defined (legally in fact) as a closely stacked pile measuring 4' x 4' x 8' (or its equivalent). Simply multiply the length x width x height and you need to come up with 128 (cubic feet).

AVOID WOOD WITH INSECT OR INSECT DAMAGE

Firewood should be stacked. Firewood with insects (Carpenter ants and Termites) could be an indication that the wood was sitting in a pile. There may be a log with a queen in it. This wood may have live insects, dormant insects, pesticides, and mass amounts of fecal matter. It will not smell the same when you burn it. Insects that appear to be dead, could be dormant due to the cold temperature. These insects will come back to life once the air temperature increases. The temperature in your home is warm enough to bring the insects back to life. You risk moving the nest into your home.

FIREWOOD DELIVERY SCAM

The worker will price your cord at $175. When they deliver it, they tell you they made a mistake. They were not aware of the time of year and the owner said it is $200. As a decent person, you pay the extra $25 dollars. Your though is, the truck is here and what’s an extra $25. This is a scam.

The most recent scam is the posting of firewood for $150. The statement (price subject to change) is written in the posting. When the truck shows up, the driver tells you the price is $200. There is a fuel charge.

Some yards will load unseasoned firewood first. They will top off the load with seasoned firewood. When you inspect the wood in the truck, all you see is the seasoned wood. Dig into the pile to see what’s at the bottom.

The firewood stacking scam is when the firewood stacker taper the stack. The stacker will tell you this is stacked like this to keep the pile from collapsing. This is a great way to hide the fact that your cord is short.

The most common scam is getting shorted firewood. The firewood is dropped in your driveway when your not home and when your done stacking the firewood, you find it is not equal to the cord or cords you have ordered. The company is suddenly to busy to take your call or tells you someone must have stole the firewood.
